A New Kind of Wilderness (12A)

Aldeburgh Cinema, Sunday 25 May 2025, 17:00  - ends at 19:04

Winner of the Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary

In a forest in Norway, a family lives an isolated lifestyle in an attempt to be wild and free, but a tragic event changes everything, and they are forced to adjust to modern society.

On a small farm in the Norwegian forest, the Payne family seeks a wild and free existence. They practice home-schooling and strive for a closely-knit family dynamic in harmony with nature. However, when tragedy strikes, it upends their idyllic world and forces them to forge a new path into modern society.

Filmmaker Silje Evensmo Jacobsen captures an intimate and soulful portrait of love, life, and growing up. The Paynes’ journey, their triumphs and struggles, invite reflection on our own life choices, our responsibility to the planet and our children, and how we navigate life after loss.

Each screening is followed by a 20 minute pre-recorded Q&A with Nik Payne and the children and hosted by Rhianna Dhillon.
