Widely regarded as one of cinema’s most powerful and politically charged masterpieces, Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers is newly remastered from the 4K-restored original negative and presented in its most complete and authentic form to date.
“an absolute cinematic masterpiece… it’s the film that’s influenced me more than any other..” - Paul Greengrass
“just stunning, groundbreaking… brilliant film making, a really gripping piece of cinema” - Ken Loach
"Probably the most stirring revolutionary epic since Potemkin!" - Pauline Kael
“A masterpiece! Surely the most harrowing political epic ever!”
– Philip Gourevitch, The New Yorker
“Astonishing! A political thriller of unmatched realism!”
– A.O. Scott, The New York Times
Recreating the Algerian struggle for independence from French occupation and depicting the brutal acts committed by both sides, it is a gripping, thought-provoking chronicle of resistance, repression – now more relevant today than ever.
Pontecorvo’s groundbreaking portrait of the Algerian fight for independence, charting the tactics of the movement and the violent response by the colonial French government, remains one of cinema’s most striking political works. Sarah Maldoror worked with Pontecorvo on set as continuity supervisor, costume designer and as a liaison with some of the local population. Ennio Morricone’s brilliant score heightens the tension, but never lifts us out of the harsh realities of the situation.
