In Desert Island Flicks, host Jon Canter invites celebrated actors, writers and film people to choose clips from their favourite films and give us insights into their life and work.


For our first Desert Island Flicks of 2025, we are delighted to welcome Michael Palin.

Tickets can be purchased online and via the box office during our regular box office opening hours.

Additionally, we will be opening our physical box office from 11am to 1pm on Friday 14th March for in-person / telephone bookings.

From the 14th March, Friends can purchase one ticket at the discounted price of £25 plus one additional ticket for a non-Friend at full price.

Michael Palin established his reputation with Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Ripping Yarns.  His work includes several films including Monty Python and the Holy Grail; Life of Brian; A Private Function, Fierce Creatures and a BAFTA winning performance as the hapless Ken in A Fish Called Wanda.  In 2017 Michael played the part of Molotov in the movie The Death of Stalin. Michael wrote and appeared in the films The Missionary, American Friends and the television plays East of Ipswich and Number 27.  He played Jim Nelson in Alan Bleasdale’s GBH and presented two films for the BBC’s Great Railway Journeys.  He starred in a three-part contemporary ghost story for the BBC called Remember Me and in 2019 he played The Green Man in the BBC adaptation of Worzel Gummidge.


Michael has written numerous books to accompany his very successful travel series Around the World in 80 Days. He is the author of several children’s stories, the play The Weekend and the novels Hemingway’s Chair and The Truth.


Michael has published four volumes of diaries; 1969–1979: The Python Years; 1980-1988: Halfway to Hollywood; 1988-1998: Travelling to Work and 1999-2009: There and Back which was published in September 2024


From 2009–2012 Michael was President of the Royal Geographical Society and he was made a BAFTA fellow in 2013.


Having been awarded a CBE for services to television in the 2000 New Year Honours, Michael was knighted in the 2019 New Year Honours when he was appointed a KCMG for services to travel, culture and geography.


Jon Canter has lived in Aldeburgh for over thirty years.  His tv writing credits include Not The Nine O’Clock News, Posh Nosh, Murder Most Horrid, and Live At The Apollo. He script edited A Bit of Fry & Laurie and for many years wrote stand-up comedy with Lenny Henry. His radio series Believe It won Best Scripted Comedy at the BBC Audio Awards, while Boswell’s Lives won the Prix Europa for Best Fiction Radio Series. Jon’s novels include Worth and A Short Gentleman - the tragi-comic story of a barrister who commits a crime in a house in Aldeburgh.
